With only the slightest of delays, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is to enter the 21st century in a move that prioritises digital diplomacy over cocktail party glad-handing.
The mission handed to Tom Fletcher, a former ambassador to Lebanon, was to find ways of making the Foreign Office more cost efficient and channel the savings into a sharper-edged diplomatic presence. “Despite what you may be hearing,” one diplomat said, “this is not about turning the office into a set from Spooks — it’s about sensible ways of using and distributing data, getting smarter on all levels.”
