The Foreign Office must find a new role to stop brain drain

Morale is low and key diplomats are leaving the UK department, writes Bronwen Maddox.

Of all the reports which the Foreign and Commonwealth Office prepares on the world’s problems, the one on its own urgent need for reform, published on Monday, is among the best. Britain’s diplomatic service needs to be more like the TV drama Spooks and less like the 1970s sitcom The Good Life, said the hard-hitting analysis by Tom Fletcher, a former ambassador to Lebanon, tipped as a rising star of the service — if it does reform.
